The Municipal Data Office analyses the diversity of origins of the city’s inhabitants
Barcelona is an ever more diverse city, as shown by the report by the Municipal Data Office (OMD) analysing the city’s official resident population according to their place of birth and displaying its evolution.

There are currently 1,702,814 people on the municipal register of residents. The OMD study “Barcelona’s population by place of birth and nationality as of 1/01/2024: a diverse Barcelona” demonstrates a change over the years in the composition of the city’s population according to origin.
In 2024, the number of people on the register who were not born in Barcelona exceeds the number of people born in the city (46.1%). Those born outside the city were from the rest of Catalonia (6.9%), the rest of Spain (13.4%) and foreign countries (33.6%). If in the year 2000 there were 74,169 people of foreign origin, this figure has increased sevenfold in 2024.
A city where 180 nationalities coexist
Among all the nationalities making up the Barcelona reality, the Italian nationality accounts for the largest number with 50,000 people, way ahead of Columbia in second place with 28,551 people and then Pakistan (24,706), China (21,876), Peru (21,090) and France (18,723). We should bear in mind that the number of Italian nationals also includes many people born in Argentina.
