Shopping in the open air
One of the most traditional yet different open air markets is Mercat de les Flors de la Rambla. It has been situated on the famous Barcelona street for over 200 years. The flower stalls are part of the Boqueria and were remodelled in the 1990s. You can find all types of plants and flowers here.
The craft markets, for food or other products, are often set up in the most central squares of each neighbourhood. There you will find a mixed offering of products but all with a common denominator: they are made by the craftsmen and women themselves and they have the Fet a Mà (made by hand) seal. Among the most typical is the craft food fair, the Fira del Col·lectiu d’Artesans d’Alimentació, in Plaça del Pi, in Ciutat Vella, which is held on the first and third weekend of each month. The stalls offer a wide and varied assortment of artisanal foodstuffs, from cheeses and yoghurts to wines and vinegars.
Painters' markets are also usual and can be found in many of the city's districts. Artists meet up in Sarrià - Sant Gervasi, for example, on the first Sunday of each month at Plaça de Sarrià. There they display and sell their work. Every Saturday and Sunday in Ciutat Vella you can see the Mostra d’Art Sant Josep Oriol, in the square of the same name. Established in 1977, it is one of the oldest of its kind and specialises in painting, with a wide range of styles and techniques available on its 50 stalls.
There are also markets that are held at specific times of the year. One of the most important culinary markets is the Mercat de Mercats (remove link), which is held in October, a big hit with the public. It used to be held opposite the Cathedral but has moved to Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes.
Around the Christmas festivitiesthere is the Fira de Santa Llúcia din front of the cathedral, in Ciutat Vella. This market heralds the arrival of the Christmas festivities and here you can buy decorations, nativity scenes and Christmas trees.
Also around Christmas is the Fira de Reis de la Gran Via. There is also the Fira de Reis [Three Kings Fair] which is held in a number of the city’s neighbourhoods.
