Cultural heritage
Standing on the mountain-facing side of Carrer Ferrocarrils Catalans, this quarry bears testimony to the first stone quarry on Montjuïc. Quarries had been dug on either side of the mountain from Roman times up to the 20th century, to extract this stone, whose its hardness and resistance made it an ideal building material in the city for walls, houses and sculptures. Here we can see the gaps left after the extraction of large blocks of stone, as well as the marks left by the picks used to prepare the faces of the stone blocks. These large blocks were then probably transported by sea from here to the other side of Montjuïc and the historical centre of the city.
