The water tower

The Gràcia water tower is a vestige of the area’s rural past. From being little more than a small farming community, it became the most important town on the Barcelona plain.

Cultural heritage
At a time when crops were the mainstay of the economy of pre-urban Gràcia, this rough plastered-brick cylindrical tower was erected to control the pressure of the water to be distributed.
It is a practical construction in which the only decorative liberties taken are the wrought-iron trident of Poseidon, the Greek king of the sea, who crowns the tower, and the blind arches running round it below him.

Observacions
En un moment en què els cultius eren el motor de l'economia gracienca preurbana, garantir-ne el rec era vital. Per això, a mitjans segle XIX, es va decidir aixecar aquesta tosca torre cilíndrica d´obra arrebossada destinada a controlar la pressió de l'aigua per a la distribució.
