C/ Riera had the biggest concentration of the neighbourhood’s factories in the 19th century, giving rise to the nickname “noisy street”.

  • Urban spaces

During the steam power period, Riereta was known as the noisy street, owing to the noise that came from the machines of its factories, such as the Gasso (1802), Tous (1833) and España Industrial, which operated in the Raval district between 1839 and 1847. The Raval was one of Europe’s biggest industrial centres in its day, an area whose residents’ average life expectancy was shortened by their long working hours and poor hygienic conditions. Associations, choirs, cooperatives, cultural centres and theatres sprung up there as a means to improving people’s quality of life and ensuring their access to culture.
