Travel back to bohemian Barcelona
Taking its inspiration from Paris’ bohemian establishments, Barcelona’s Els Quatre Gats soon became the cultural epicentre of its day. Now a bar and restaurant, it offers meals at reasonable prices. Local produce and Catalan cuisine is on the menu, with popular dishes including broad beans a la catalana and scrambled eggs with prawns. The decoration is another of its attractions as it retains much of the original furniture and there are many period photographs.
The building
Casa Martí is a Modernista home built in 1896 by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. It has a certain northern European flavour and features stained glass windows and intricate decoration. It is adorned with sculptures by Eusebi Arnau and the statue Sant Josep, by the artist Josep Llimona (although this is a copy as the original was lost during the Spanish Civil War).
