New uses for old buildings
In 1972, the old train station belonging to the North of Spain Railway Company closed and was converted into today’s bus station. A Guàrdia Urbana police barracks was also located there, along with a municipal gym where, in 1992, the Olympic table-tennis tournament was held.
The original Neoclassical-style building dates from 1861. It was designed by Pere Andrés and the main feature that has been preserved is the south facade, which looks out onto the park. The magnificent glazed roof, as well as the facades on Carrer de Nàpols and the Carrer de Sardenya, are the work of Demetri Ribes and these were added later, in 1910. What stands out is the glass and ironwork, used a lot at that time in public buildings such as stations and markets.
The park
Sunny and peaceful, the park spreads over more than three hectares in which you can rest, jog, run, take some refreshment at the bar and play table tennis. There is also an area for dogs, a children’s recreation area and toilets, and it leads to the Fort Pienc football ground
Two large pieces of land art in the park stand out: Spiral of Trees, a spiral mosaic that goes into the ground, and Fallen Sky, a blue ceramic pyramid that stands in the grass. Both works were made using ceramic mosaic and are by the American artist Beverly Pepper as a tribute to Antoni Gaudí.
