A theatre with a long history

Located on Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, the impressive Teatre Coliseum building has hosted some of the most outstanding, daring hit theatre shows of the day since 2006. However, the history of this site goes back to a much earlier time, when, in 1923, the architect Francesc de Paula Nebot built the theatre to house a cinema for Josep Solà i Guardiola, Victorià Saludes and the Marquis of Argentera.

Inspired by the Paris Opera, the building adopts a style similar to that made popular by the French beaux-arts movement, with a monumental facade and two neo-baroque columns. The whole is crowned by a great dome. Designed by Valeri Corberó, this feature has been used by various cultural organisations over the years.

A unique theatre venue

All kinds of films have been shown on the Coliseum’s screen, and the theatre has always hosted a varied programme of entertainment featuring different artistic disciplines, including dance, opera, and classical and popular music. Managed by Grup Balaña since 1958, this has become an essential venue at which to enjoy the best on the Barcelona performing arts scene.
