The Central University gardens, also known as the "Ferran Soldevila gardens" in tribute to the historian of that name, are a bubble of peace and greenery in the heart of the city.

Twin courtyards

Either side of the main entrance lay the Science courtyard (on the right) and the Arts courtyard (on the left), linked by a passageway. Two spaces landscaped in the typical 19th-century style that remind you of cloisters. There is a pond at the centre – with fish, frogs and a fountain – and stone benches, ivy and large trees on its four sides. The Arts courtyard boasts orange trees, cypress trees and an Indian banyan and its Science courtyard magnolias, cypress trees and another banyan.

Vegetation

The University gardens are known for their botanical wealth. There are exotic species, such as the ombú –the only tree that grows on the Argentinean Pampa– the yucca, the ginkgo, the Himalayan cedar, the aloe and the Australian and Turkish oaks. There are Mediterranean species too, such as the holm oak, the stone pine and the fig, cypress and carob trees. And lots of chattering birds taking shelter.
